Kitchen Reno Paranoia
She Said
So, as I’m talking on the phone, at the opposite end of the room to the spot where my 36” Viking range needs to fit, I start looking and wondering about that space. Is the counter overhang larger on the left side than on the right?? Call me paranoid (and believe me, you wouldn’t be the first), but I have to break out the tape measure.
The guy from Latitude who did the measure, 16 days ago, had noted that there was a 37” opening. Was I certain that it was a 36” range? I broke out the basic specs for his benefit and we agreed that it was, in fact, going to measure 36”. So, he tells me that he’ll take up half an inch (1/4” – or four sixteenths of an inch – on each side) with overhang to narrow the gap.
I should be left with half an inch of clearance at this point, right?
I measure. Again and again. I’ve got thirty-six and three sixteenths inches of play. My four hundred and fifty pound range is going to have to be “slid” on slate (i.e., bumpy tile) into a spot that proves to have three sixteenths of an inch of “wiggle room”.
Furthermore, the overhang is greater on the left than on the right! Well, at the front, at any rate!! On the right side, it’s 3/8” at the back and at the front. On the left, it’s 3/8” at the back nine sixteenths at the front!!
The measurements won’t matter, as long as the range will actually fit, right? I try to call Didi, our designer, to get some reassurance. She’s either with a client or on a break. So here I sit….
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Stay tuned!
