Kitchen Reno: Day Two

She Said

Our flooring contractors, Charles and Rob, arrive at 9:00 a.m.. Why did I get up so early??

Holy cow, does it ever make a lot of noise, breaking ceramic tile! Wielding their trusty hammers, it seems to take virtually no time to get these tiles demo’d…. Then I’m advised, “This is the easy part”.

From that point, the guys have to remove the first layer of plywood, to which the tiles have been attached. This requires drills, crowbars, and a lot of sweat and cursing, apparently. Luckily, I’ve heard it all before….

Day Two

The 4 days of flooring work are scheduled as follows:

  1. Tear out floor;
  2. Install new sub-floor – a layer of easy board over top of a layer of plywood to prevent cracking of slate tiles in the event of tremors, etc.;
  3. Laying tiles;
  4. Grouting and sealing the floor.

Although it’s been a long day, they’ve managed to stick to their schedule. So far so good! The pessimist in me is wondering what will go wrong tomorrow….

Stay tuned!
