Broccoli in Wine

Anyone who enjoys cooking and good beverages would love to have Kevin Brauch’s job. This guy travels around the world visiting wineries, distilleries and great restaurants for his show The Thirsty Traveller. I saw this recipe for drunken tree and figured we just had to try it.

Ingredients:

* 1/4 cup olive oil
* 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
* 1 large bunch broccoli, cut into flowerets
* 1 1/2 cups sauvignon blanc
* salt
* freshly ground pepper

Directions:

1. In a heavy skillet, heat oil.
2. Remove from heat and add the finely chopped garlic. Stir for 30 seconds, and return skillet to low heat.
3. Add the broccoli and toss until broccoli is coated with oil.
4. Add the Sauvignon Blanc, and salt and pepper, to taste.
5. Simmer uncovered for 5 minutes. Cover and simmer 15 minutes.
6. Transfer the broccoli to a heated bowl with a slotted spoon. Boil the liquid in the skillet over high heat until reduced to 1/2 cup. Pour liquid over broccoli and serve.

In our feeble attempt to time dinner, we ended up overcooking the broccoli just a touch, but it was still a nice dish. The wine really brought out the bright green colour of the broccoli. The sauce was actually a bit tart for my liking, so I think next time we may try a Chardonnay rather than the Sauvignon Blanc.
