Tyrone Mill Cider Donuts: Best of the best!

The lovely gems of deep fried goodness that you see to the left are quite possibly the best donuts on the planet!

The Tyrone Mill was built in 1846, well before Colonel Sam McLaughlin established the carriage company that would evolve into General Motors of Canada in a drive shed just down the road. The saw and grist mill is considered one of the finest privately owned mills of its kind in Ontario. In fact, the water powered mill still saws wood and grinds flour today.

That home ground flour is the basis for the Tyrone Mill’s signature cider donuts. These rounds of doughy excellence are available plain, but the ones that are rolled in cinnamon sugar are by far the belle of the ball. Made fresh daily, the luckiest customers are the ones who arrive as a batch comes out of the oven. The warmth, coupled with the sweet tang of cider is the stuff dreams are made of. In fact, I don’t believe it is possible to leave the mill before eating at least two of the old world treats. On our last visit I ate three!

The bakery store in the mill also has all sorts of home baked treats like cookies and butter tarts. There are also shelves full of gourmet sauces and seasonings and a full range of the mill’s own flour.

Whether you are out for a country drive, or on your way to or from Mosport, the Tyrone Mill is one spot that you must visit. Once you make the trip, chances are you’ll be back for more!

This post was actually fueled by BlogTO’s post today on the Best Donuts In Toronto. Given that Tyrone isn’t exactly Toronto, perhaps we’ll just have to say their donuts are the best in the province.
